  • My GAST vacuum pump or compressor sounds sluggish. It sounds like it is struggling to work. Is the motor bad?

Most standard Gast pumps are dual voltage – 115V/230V. They come wired for high voltage. If you are running low voltage when the pump is wired high the pump will struggle to work. There are wiring instructions on the motor label. It is a quick fix of changing a couple of wires and you will be ready to go.
If the pump has been in operation for a while and it sounds like it is struggling you should check the exhaust filter/muffler. Remove the filter and turn the pump on briefly. If it sounds like it is working properly you have isolated the problem. Change the filters and proceed.
If the pump has been in operation for a while and it is being used as a compressor check the pressure coming out of the unit. Many Gast pumps are capable of over-pressurization. If they run above the rated pressure the motor will have a hard time keeping up with the increased demand. Warning: running above rated pressure can cause damage or failure. There are inexpensive relief valves to protect the pumps from this condition.

  • AC Induction Motors: My 3 phase motor is spinning the wrong way

Reverse the wiring of two of the legs of the three phase power. Power up, test, and repeat with the other legs until the motor spins in the correct direction.

  • The part number is missing from my sensor, how do I find out if it is NPN or PNP?

Connect power and common wires of your sensor to an appropriate power supply. Check the voltage between the output signal and 0V of the power supply using a voltmeter. Activate the sensor, the sensor should alternate between a voltage and an open circuit. 0V = NPN & 24V (or power supply voltage) = PNP
